Films at Amazon.com

Almost all of the films mentioned so far in articles, or listed as nominees or winners on the Hugo/Nebula Award pages, are available from amazon.com on either DVD or Blu-Ray Disc, with just a very few still only released on VHS. This list is for genre works only, even though I have mentioned some mainstream films (Saving Private Ryan, Citizen Kane, and Casablanca for instance) in a few articles. For anything like that you can do a general search once you get to amazon. I did cheat a bit here and there, including sequels of films mentioned, such as Alien Resurrection, and three of the eleven Star Trek films, which were not nominated for any awards and so far not mentioned elsewhere on other pages. I figured that whenever I or someone else got around to reviewing those particular series then all of the ones in the series would probably be mentioned at that time.

There is one non-genre film I have left on the list, Empire of the Sun, and I did that for two reasons. Not only do I think it is Spielberg's best film to date, it also relates to real-life experiences of one of my favorite authors, J. G. Ballard. There is another film that has never been released in the US, that being The Bed-Sitting Room, nominated for a Hugo in 1970. It is one with which I am familiar, and I've been meaning to do a review of it for a long time. I taped it off Turner Classic Movies a while back, and even bought a Region 2 Blu-Ray off amazon.co.uk, not realizing my PS3 won't play multi-region discs. Hopefully one of these days I'll either get a multi-region Blu-Ray player or it will be officially released in the US. I am providing that UK release link though, in case anyone else can take advantage of it. And lastly, there is only one film that has never been released on any video format, The World, the Flesh & the Devil, nominated for a Hugo in 1960.

In most cases I have provided the link for the widescreen format, usually in the single disc release, or the least expensive set available. Amazon provides information on their pages for all available formats, so you can search for whatever you prefer. Other than adding new titles reviewed or added to the award pages, I haven't updated this page in quite a while. When I first started the site in 2000 the only DVD player I had was my computer, VHS tapes were still being released, and Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) wasn't even on the horizon. Now most everything is available on DVD and/or Blu-Ray. If there is only a VHS link it means that title has never been released on either disc format. When you see DVD (OOP) it means any previous disc editions are out of production, so in that case I have also provided a VHS link. Of course it is inevitable that some of these disc editions will go out of production, and even now a few of the VHS titles are only available used, but I will endeavor to do a better job in the future of updating this page.
